First, try disabling any and all antivirus / antispyware or "security" software you might have running. Then, try installing Paint.NET again. If that doesn't work ...

Can you click on the Start menu (Windows logo / "pearl"), then type in "%TEMP%" and press Enter.

Then, find the file called PdnMsiInstall.log, and open it. Reply back with its contents. (hopefully it has some useful information!)

Hey cool, the MSI logging produced something useful :)

Ok, I got an idea from this page after doing a search for the error code number (80073712) with Google: http://www.vistaforums.com/Forum/Topic10485-9-1.aspx

So, try this:

1. Click on the start menu / windows logo pearl.
2. Type in 'winsxs' and it should end up with one search result at the top of the start menu
3. Click on that result -- it should open up C:/Windows/winsxs
4. Find the file 'pending.xml'
5. Rename it to something like 'pending-Backup.xml' (you will probably have to click through several UAC / confirmation dialogs)
6. Restart
7. Cross your fingers
8. Try installing again

Rick,

I was able to generate the same error by attempting to reinstall the latest pdn installer on a Dell XPS M1330 Vista Ultimate machine.

The pdnmsiinstall log displays the following:

An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'policy.9.0.Microsoft.VC90.OpenMP,version="9.0.21022.8",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="amd64",type="win32-policy"'. === Logging stopped: 1/20/2008 19:21:16 ===

Also note that there is no such file as pending.xml that I can find in the ../winsxs folder.

Bill Lange that is not the same error code as yours is 800736B3 and venom_suite is 80073712.

So there for your problem is unrelated to venom_suite problem. I did look up your problem however and it seems it could be a bad install of .NET Frameworks 3.0. I would repair or reinstall all .NET Frameworks on your computer.

Also if your reinstalling Paint.NET make sure the old Paint.NET is uninstalled.

Hey, I'm getting the same exact error as venom. Same logs and everything.
So far the solutions given haven't worked. Can anyone help me (too)?

I've tried reinstalling the .NET framework, but when I do, it says it's already on the operating system. If it won't automatically uninstall and reinstall .NET, how can I remove it? I've tried deleting the folder, but it says I don't have permission.

For those of us getting "HRESULT: 0x800736B3" on 32-bit Vista, your telling me I can't use Paint.NET 3.22 because I can't put an amd64 assembly in the GAC? Paint.NET 3.08 installs just fine. So does VS.NET 2005 and VS.NET 2008. Is there no hope?

If I recall correctly, there was somebody reporting this on a 64-bit version of Windows as well. The SxS respository (it's not the GAC -- OpenMP is a 'native' assembly) shouldn't have problems installing an x64 assembly on an x86 system. It won't ever get used of course, but that's not SxS's problem. Plenty other people are able to install in 32-bit Vista without any trouble. I really wish I knew what caused this.

Hi Rick. So what do you suggest I do? I'm a .NET developer, so repairing or reinstalling the framework does not seem like a task I want to undertake just to run Paint.NET. Don't get me wrong: I love Paint.NET, but not at the expense of my development environment. I can stick with 3.08, but of course you no longer support it.

My mistake on the GAC issue. My brain went to the GAC because of the stack trace I found in the PdnSetupNgenInstall.log. It ends with the following error:
--
2/6/2008 8:43:06 PM - about to register shell extension
2/6/2008 8:43:06 PM - ... 32-bit
2/6/2008 8:43:06 PM - shellExtensionPaths[0] = C:\Program Files\Paint.NET\ShellExtension_x86.dll

at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.DeleteSubKeyTree(String subkey)
at PaintDotNet.SetupNgen.MainImpl(String[] args)
2/6/2008 8:43:06 PM - Closing log
--

I appreciate any help you can give.

Something about being unable to delete a registry key because the subkey does not exist. Could that be because the subkey name is empty? Because "args[4] = PROGRAMSGROUP=" way up at the top? My log is almost identical to the one shown above.

Would I be able to compile the code such that I can run the installer in a debugger and set a breakpoint at that call to Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.DeleteSubKeyTree in SetupNgen.MainImpl?

I found a solution that might be the fix:

Go check in windows services that the service named "Windows Modules Installer" is up and running. Mine was disabled. Enabling it removed the VC90 error. ( i also had problems with windows update because of it and a few other VC90 installations ive tried (vcredist_x86.exe for vs.net 2008).

To catch up on this -- the exception reported there is informational, it isn't the cause of any failure. If Paint.NET can't delete the reg key, it doesn't care, but it still reports the error to the log file.
