As usual there are two ways to get it:

1. Preferred: Use the built-in updater from within Paint.NET. If you are using version 3.36, go to the Help menu and then Check for Updates. You will need to click on the Options button, and then make sure that ""Also check for pre-release (beta) versions" is enabled. For v3.5 alpha/beta, go to the Utilities menu instead of the Help menu.

2. Download directly: http://www.getpaint.net/files/zip/previ ... nstall.zip . There is no need to uninstall the old version; that will be taken care of automatically.

Changes/fixes since version 3.5 Beta 2:
* Fixed a performance glitch with some tools, where the action and subsequent undo/redo would be slow.
* Improved temporary memory usage of commands in the Image menu.
* Reduced disk space use by about 12MB by using NTFS compression on installation files used for staging (.MSI) and diagnostics (.PDB).
* Fixed many tools' clipping, with respect to an active selection.
* Improved compression for PDN files.
* Fixed many small miscellaneous crashes and glitches.

I have a feeling this is a known issue: I'm getting a lot of performance issues as soon as I have a complex (non-rectangle) selection. Of course I hoped the beta would fix this.

On an image 583 x 778 (had to shrink it to 30% to make any progress at all), with a selection as seen in this screenshot, trying to add any more to the selection was extremely slow.

Complex selections like that require a ton of CPU power. Fact of life.

I forgot to come back and reply to this; I've just been testing it with the new build.

I made the following complex selection using the freehand tool, in a single action: Screenshot. The screenshot is shrunk a heap, the one I was testing with was 2592 x 1944.

The performance is fine until I try to add a second selection, even a tiny one, with any tool. As soon as I do that the tools begin to drag. The same occurs if you create one rectangle and then go on to create another, with even a blank white image over ~1200x1200.

I first installed this build from the direct download option, then today it prompted me to update to the same build. After installing, I got a:

EXIF data is lost from images when saving.

For comparison, I just opened a picture in PDN and saved it under a new name: Before, After.

Your screenshot doesn't make sense to me -- SetupFrontEnd.exe is digitally signed, yet it says Unknown Publisher there. If it isn't reading the signature then maybe it's ignoring the manifest too (which says "Hey dummy, I'm Win7 compatible, honest"). I remember you saying something about a hard link or a junction to keep 3.36 and 3.5 separated. Maybe that's tripping other stuff up too.

I'll get rid of it and see if any future installs do it.

You're seeing black in the toolbar area instead of glass? Is that what it looks like when you start the app, or does it happen later? Did you switch themes or anything while Paint.NET was running?

It seems that build 3572 fixed the problem. I didn't change themes and it happened as soon as I started PDN.

Thanks anyways!

I think I got the same screen pyrochild did after I closed PDN when I had "Start Paint.net" checked in the installer. I didn't screenshot it though.

Try ... install Beta 2, then let it update (via Utilities->Check for Updates), and take a screenshot if it happens again.

You don't have any folder redirection or junction points or hard links or magical ponies set up in order to keep 3.5 and 3.36 "separated", do you?

Couldn't reproduce it :(. I don't have any links set up, and I'm on a pretty fresh Win 7 x64 install.

This is some stuff the action center archived:

add layer
selection tool (around the 200% box)
fill with red
knock back transparency (Boltbaits plugin)
add layer change pixel size to 8 and try to draw line with arrow end

oma, you can only draw inside of a selection. If you want to draw outside of a selection, press Ctrl-D or Esc first. This will cancel your selection.
