As usual there are two ways to get it:

1. Preferred: Use the built-in updater from within Paint.NET. If you are using version 3.36, go to the Help menu and then Check for Updates. You will need to click on the Options button, and then make sure that ""Also check for pre-release (beta) versions" is enabled. For v3.5 alpha/beta, go to the Utilities menu instead of the Help menu.

2. Download directly: http://www.getpaint.net/files/zip/previ ... nstall.zip . There is no need to uninstall the old version; that will be taken care of automatically.

Changes/fixes since version 3.5 Beta 1:
* The menu bar was rendering incorrectly for certain themes (Windows 7 / Vista).
* Some items were not showing up in the 'Recent Items' jump list (Windows 7).
* Clicking on the canvas straight from the menu would cause the paintbrush to draw a long streak.
* Copy+Paste would sometimes miss a pixel edge on the right/bottom sides, when using Fixed Ratio / Fixed Size modes.
* Fixed a crash when moving pixels off-canvas, switching tools, then trying to move the pixels back onto the canvas.
* Fixed some messed up rendering for IndirectUI effect dialogs (Windows XP).
* Performance is improved when switching between images that have lots of layers.
* Aero 'snap' wasn't working when dragging part of the glassy area of the toolbar (Windows 7).
* Added a new menu item, Window -> Glass Dialog Buttons. You can use this to disable the "glass footers" for dialogs (Windows 7 / Vista).
* Glass Dialog Buttons are now disabled when font smoothing is disabled.
* If an e-mail program isn't installed, the error message for Help->Send Feedback is more informative.
* "Centimeters" was being truncated in the toolbar.
* The shape tools were not using pixel snapping.
* Layer names with ampersands were not showing up correctly.
* Updated the internal list of incompatible and unstable plugins, which are then blocked from loading.
* Fixed a crash with the Rectangle Select tool if "Fixed Size" mode was used and negative numbers were entered.
* Fixed an access violation due to a race condition in finalizing effect rendering versus un-write protecting the layer's pixels.
* Fixed an access violation in the renderer for the background transparency "checkers".
* Fixed a crash when you would resize a selection to 0-width and/or 0-height, then expand it.
* Fixed a crash due to an overflow that prevented very large images from working (64-bit only).
* Fixed a crash with scanning/printing.
* Fixed the status bar's progress bar showing up and doing nothing for codecs that don't report saving progress, such as JPEG.
* Fixed a major issue with the readability of the "update is available" dialog in any non-English language.
* Fixed a crash with the Zoom tool.
* Fixed some really weird scroll-flickering with the Text tool.

These still apply:

Also, when starting Paint.NET using the installer's last page, it ignores my already-pinned Paint.NET taskbar button and opens up a new one (which maintains its own jump list).

This update is so awesome. I like what you've done with it.

One of the things I hated about the previous version and like about this one (that it was removed), was the circle when using the paintbrush tool. I kept getting confused where to position it... lol...

The lines surrounding the Primary and Secondary colours are now solid, and look out of place since every other boarder is blurred (layers, image list, canvas). It was blurred last build btw.

When mousing over some options they are dark blue (#000080). Layers, Image list, the 'Units: Pixels' on the main toolbar and the 'Fill: Solid Color' on the 'Tool: Brush' toolbar, are all difficult to read because of this low contrast with the words and the highlight. On other parts, highlighting over different parts it makes a much nicer light gray (#BEBEBE) like where you decide the Brush width and the Zoom.

Highlight differences are right next to each other, like the last two of each of the sentences I just wrote, so it looks very inconsistent. Please remember to make the currently selected Layer/History different from the rollover-ed one to avoid confusion, while looking good.

Anyway good build, I haven't had any crashes yet. Oh and I forgot to complement you on the selection outline dottiness, MUCH easier to tell the difference between the non-selected bits and it doesn't look like c**p when you select a gradient.

The attached screenshot shows you three more or less small things I'd like to admit.

1. If I enable "Glass Dialog Buttons" (the view I prefer), it's nearly impossible to read the button's captions. Other buttons show the their caption without problems and after disabling that option the other buttons are okay again...
2. The selection mode "Fixed Size" uses inches for default. But I'm a German and never use inches and even centimeters does not make that much sense for me in that case. I suggest using pixels as default selection.
3. It's possible to pin the color window to all of the four window sides. But since I open one, two or three images at a time only, I'd like to pin the window to the black top's bottom. (lowest priority you can have xD !)

Some information about my system: German Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit version with latest Paint.NET Beta release and the default Aero theme.

If you need more information about my system, simply contact me via one of the IMs or mail.

[EDIT]
(Next point is be a small usability improvement only...)
4. Being able to zoom in and out with the plus and minus keys or (even better) with "Ctrl and plus/minus" to zoom in and out and "Ctrl and 0" to zoom back to the default view.

Looks like I'll have to fix this for when ClearType is disabled. For now, you'll have to enable ClearType.

I do not understand what you mean. Screenshot please.

Umm, this is already how everything works. Ctrl and +/- are zoom, while Ctrl+Alt+0 or Ctrl+Shift+A are 100%.

I think he means being able to snap the floating windows to the edge of the glass, as shown with the colour window in the screenshot he posted.

Rick after reading through your fixes, I couldn't find where you fixed these two
(1) Import from File and (2) Smudge not working. Thanks Bob

I can't find where anyone has said anything about Import From File not working. I just tried it and it works just fine.

Smudge doesn't work because it crashes on 3.5, and is blocked from loading (it was using a bunch of things that were either internal to Paint.NET, or that were moved). Pyrochild will have to release a new version at some point.

Setup errors on Windows 7 (7100).

I'm getting this message. I have plenty of disk space.
