I've written an effect that does a pretty good job of reducing the noise in an image while maintaining good detail. Give it a go!

Nice to see you again, Tom! It looks good; I'll give it a shot.

Let me know how it goes. I'm still experimenting with some tweaks, but overall it's quite good at taking a noisy image and returning a smooth result without sacrificing too much detail.

It does pretty well.

Now, I did play with the GREYCstoration settings quite a bit. The lack of results may be a result of my inability with the wrapper, but the fact that I got good results with your plugin - and it's much simpler - means that I'll probably be using it much, much more. I'm a fan. :-)

EDIT: Apologies for how crappy the image is. I just got it from the WP article on Image Noise.

Looking good, I think I will be using this more than GREYCstoration.
Thank you :)

I like it. I just tried it out on a Terragen render that came out with a bit of noise. Most of the details stayed put, I like it. Also the default settings work pretty well as it is. I'll definitely be using this.

My only complaint is the 'Strength' slider. If you click the arrow it jumps up (or down) a full value of 1. Maybe it does that on purpose, but to me it just makes more sense to go by increments of .10.

It has now replaced GREYCstoration, so thank you, Tom. And it is good to see you back; any plans for more plugins or is this your seasonal present to us all?

Works quite nicely.
One suggestion though: while image noise tends to be most pronounced in shadows, is it possible to implement strength "adaptively", based on pixel brightness? So that highlights get gradually less noise reduction than shadows?
For example, check the last sample image with much more noise in dark face compared to bright backround.

Looking at it again this morning, I was noticing the same. In my example photo, the darker part in the middle didn't change as dramatically as the sides did. Although it still did better than the GREYCstoration....

Thanks for spelling it out, Tanel. My explanation would've fallen all over myself. :-)

I just tested using the Water lilies photo that comes with XP. There is some artifacting in the dark areas so I ran it through both GrayC and this. On the defaults GrayC did th ebetter job but after turning the radius all the way up on this plugin it was a lot cleaner, clearer and the areas where darker than in the original which is how they should of been in my opinion.

 This is pretty effective. I tried this on a picture of a rabbit and  It came out 10x better! It's been a while since you've last been here, Tom. Nice to see you back...

Not bad, I admit.

I second that opinion.

Good idea. Try it out:
Attachment:
ReduceNoise 1.1.zip
. It's a subtle change, but it does work nicely.
